What Could Bigger than the iPhone? This… - iPhriends.com

NY Times writer David Pogue, wrote this article describing what I have been thinking since late June when I purchased the world’s first mobile computing device.

The iPhone itself is impressive to say the least; but the software development and distribution platforms Apple has built are the bigger story here.

Facebook apps were an evolutionary step towards leveraging a user base and a customized Internet experience. Wait until the apps built for the iPhone not only incorporate your contacts, but also your location, in real time. Not to mention the iPhone’s touch interface and accelerometer. (Check out Super Monkey Ball on the iPhone.)

People have always talked about when the first “True convergence device” would arrive to solve our audio, video, and data appetites. In my opinion the iPhone is that device, but the SDK, iPhone Apps, and the iTunes distribution platform will allow iPhone Users (iPhriends) to reach a new level of digital connectivity. The iPhone Apps that are on the horizon will change how we consume and interact with real time information.

I think in about 18-24 months the iPhone will hit a price point around $200, allowing for mass consumption. At this point, I think Apple’s growth in music, movies, and game distribution along with consumption devices (iPhone/Mac line) will push their market cap past the $200 billion mark. We will have to wait and see.
